Location: Milky Way Galaxy · Age: 4.6 billion years
Our Solar System consists of our star, the Sun, and everything bound to it by gravity — the planets Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune; dwarf planets such as Pluto; dozens of moons; and millions of asteroids, comets, and meteoroids.
The Sun: Our Solar System's Powerhouse
The Sun holds more than 99.8% of all the mass in the entire Solar System. Its powerful gravitational pull keeps every planet, asteroid, and comet in orbit.
Light from the Sun takes about 8 minutes and 20 seconds to travel 93 million miles to reach Earth — meaning when you look at sunlight, you're seeing light that left the Sun eight minutes ago.

Earth is the only world we currently know that supports life. It has liquid water oceans covering over 70% of its surface, a protective atmosphere, and a dynamic magnetic field.
Fun Fact: Earth is constantly spinning at about 1,000 miles per hour at the equator, but because we move with it, we don't feel a thing!
The Moon: Earth's Natural Satellite 🌙
The Moon is slowly moving away from Earth at a rate of about 1.5 inches (3.8 cm) per year — roughly the speed your fingernails grow!
Because the Moon has no atmosphere or weather, footprints left on the Moon by Apollo astronauts over 50 years ago are still there today, preserved in the lunar dust.
Mars: The Red Planet 🔴
Mars looks red because its dusty surface is covered in iron oxide (rust). It features Olympus Mons, a volcano three times taller than Mount Everest!
Robotic rovers like Curiosity and Perseverance are currently exploring Mars, searching for signs that ancient liquid water once flowed across its red soil.
Saturn: The Ringed Planet 🪐
Saturn is famous for its dazzling ring system, made of billions of tiny particles of ice, rock, and dust spanning thousands of miles across but only about 30 feet thick.
Fun Fact: Saturn is so light compared to its size that if you could find a bathtub big enough, Saturn would float on water!
